Gandhi, Nehru Remembered During Diplomatic Outreach

During the conversation, President Pezeshkian referred to India’s founding leaders, describing Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru as “messengers of peace, friendship, and coexistence,” according to a statement from the Iranian embassy.

The Iranian leader said Iran continues to hold India and its historical figures in “high regard” and expressed hope that this legacy of peace would reflect in India’s future engagements with the world.

He added that such brutal attacks only strengthen the shared responsibility of nations to work together. “These tragic events amplify the shared responsibility of all countries in the region and compel the regional states to eradicate the roots of terrorism through empathy, solidarity, and close cooperation,” Pezeshkian said.

Focus on Regional Trade and Stability

Beyond condolences, the leaders also discussed ways to enhance economic and strategic ties. Pezeshkian pointed to the development of Iran’s Chabahar Port as a key area for boosting regional trade, particularly between India, Iran, and Russia. He invited PM Modi to Tehran to further discuss avenues for strengthening collaboration.

In response, PM Modi thanked President Pezeshkian for Iran’s support and expressed sorrow over the deadly explosion at Iran’s Shahid Rajaee Port, where 14 people were killed. He also offered India’s assistance for relief efforts.

According to the Iranian embassy, PM Modi reiterated India’s backing for diplomatic efforts to promote peace, including a resolution of tensions between Iran and the United States. He praised Iran’s “constructive role” in fostering stability both regionally and globally.
