MrVinodPatel to set an Example for Live Donor Kidney Donation
to his Wife on this Valentine’s Day at SG Shalby, Ahmedabad

In year 2017, Mrs. Ritaben Patel – A 43 year old housewife contacted DrSiddharthMavani, Consultant Nephrologist and Transplant Physician at Shalby Hospitals, Ahmedabad with complaints of swelling on legs and breathing problem. Investigations suggested that her kidneys were failing. Immediately Kidney Biopsy was carried out and she was diagnosed to have FSGS, a Kidney Filter related problem. In advanced stage, she was managed with medication for 3 years and as she was approaching Kidney Failure stage with multiple complications, her family was counseled for the need of Kidney Transplant which a Life is saving procedure for her. Considering Cadaver (Brain Death Donor) may take longer time, her husband Mr. VinodbhaiPatel came forward as a potential Kidney Donor. Both of them were investigated and found appropriate for Kidney Transplantation.

“After USA, India has the world’s 2ndlargest Live Kidney Transplant program. With the life expectancy of average Indians constantly touching newer landmarks, it has also been putting them at higher risk of Diabetes and High BP. Easy availability of testing labs and over all awareness in doctors and general population has been helping detection of more number of kidney problems across different age groups.  According to recent studies in India:  17.5 – 18 % of Indian population is having Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and out of them 5 – 6% (for Gujarat: 8.9%) are having serious kidney problems, requiring Renal Replacement Therapy in the form of Dialysis or Kidney Transplant. On a conservative estimation, 2, 20, 000 population of India are requiring   these therapies and every year > 1 lakh patients are entering in to this pool. So we can understand the mammoth nature of this problem. Kidney Transplant is considered as the Gold Standard treatment compared to Dialysis for any patient suffering from CKD,” shared Dr. SiddharthMavani.

“There is a huge gap existing in India between the demand and Supply for Renal Transplant. In spite of this huge demand, we are currently doing only about 7500 Kidney Transplant every year against the need of 2.2 lakhs, out of which 90% is Live related and 10% is Cadaver Transplants Therefore, the need of the hour is to encourage kidney and other organ donation in our country with more and more people coming forward to pledge their organs for the benefit of the society. One  such example is set by Mr. Vinodbhai Patel who is donating his kidney to his wife Mrs. Ritaben Patel on their 23rd Wedding Anniversary as well on occasion of Valentine’s Day as token of love and care for his Valentine. And what could be better and precious gift for her. With availability of good surgical techniques including Laparoscopic Donor Surgery and availability of all newer medication, success rate of Kidney Transplants have soared up to 95% or more at our set up. So far we have successfully completed more than 400 Kidney Transplants,” added Dr. Siddharth Mavani further.

About the story of Mrs. Ritaben Patel and Mr. Vinodbhai Patel

Vinod Patel is aged 45 years. He says” For 23 years, me and my wife stood together in good and bad situations of life. Suddenly my wife started facing kidney related issues and she is going through a lot of pain and I am not able to see her like this. All these years she stood with me in all situation of life. Then how could I let her fight this problem alone? Therefore I have decided to donate her one of my kidneys. I am ready to live my life with the support of one kidney. Call it my love or my duty; she has been the most lovable and caring member of the family.  Because of her fight with kidney issues and struggling to live a normal life, every family member got disturbed. So I quickly decided to help my wife by donating one of my kidneys.

I want to conclude by saying that life is indeed in God’s hands but if we can help someone in alleviating their sorrow, we must do so. It is our duty to help those in need. God has given us two kidneys but we can live life with support of one kidney, so if you love someone more than anything, I urge you all to take a decision and express your love by eliminating their pain and sorrow and give them the chance to Live A Life Full”.
