People of Ahmedabad celebrated the 610th `birthday’ of their city with a slew of activities on Friday .The city was founded by Sultan Ahmad Shah in 1411. This year’s anniversary of its foundation is the first after Ahmedabad’s nomination earlier this year as India’s first UNESCO World Heritage City .
The celebrations started with decendent Chandan nath performing puja at Manek Burj at 9:30 am. Chandan Nath, current mahant of the Nath family that traces its roots to Baba Manek Nath, also performed traditional rituals at the Burj. The tower is considered to be the first structure of the city and the spot where its foundation was laid. Baba Manek Nath is closely associated with the lore of the city’s foundation and his name is linked to the Burj and Manek Chowk.
A group of residents cut a cake near Sidi Sayed Mosque, another of the city’s landmarks, to mark the anniversary of the city’s foundation. Some students took a heritage walk in the Walled City to get acquainted with various monuments.
At Jama Masjid, the Ahmedabad Sunni Muslim Waqf Committee marked the day by celebrating the city’s rich culture and heritage.
