Multiple customers reported receiving mouldy sweets; shop found closed when AMC went to inspect, forcing authorities to seal it.
Jai Siyaram Sweet Shop in Paldi in the city was shut down by Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) following complaints about mouldy sweets. A customer discovered fungus in a packet of penda that was purchased from the shop, known for its traditional sweets, for Raksha Bandhan. The issue came to light when a woman found mouldy penda in a 3 kg packet she had bought for the festival.
Following her complaint, another customer also reported similar findings in a Penda box brought from the same store.
Interestingly, the AMC’s health department could not conduct an inspection as the shop was closed on Raksha Bandhan. It should be noted that sweet shops don’t close their doors on the festival as sales are often brisk on those days. On Tuesday too a health department team that arrived to address the issue found the shop closed.
This has raised suspicion that the shop owner was tipped off about the team’s arrival and used the time to clear out the stock.
The shop, operating in Paldi for years, is facing scrutiny for failing to meet food safety standards. The health department later now sealed the shop and posted a notice, citing non-compliance with hygiene regulations.
